Wellbeing

Mindfulness

Mindfulness strategies are all about being ‘present’ by connecting with one or more of your five senses. They are sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. Here are some mindfulness techniques you can try:

  • Focus on 3 things you can hear, 3 things you can smell, and 3 things your body can physically feel
  • Touch is a great way to be present – you might stomp your feet, pat your cat or even have a massage
  • Get absorbed in the moment – playing sport, playing a video game or just having fun with friends is a great way to have a mental break from worries
  • Focus on really listening to an awesome song
  • Eat something yummy really slowly, savouring the taste
  • Splash cool water on your face – this can trigger the ‘mammalian dive reflex’ which is an automatic response that slows your heart rate and brain waves (designed to help us survive when swimming underwater)

Why does mindfulness help you feel calm?

Our mind has a unique ability to venture into the past or future!

For example, we can stress over a fight with had with a friend yesterday, or worry about a test we have next week.

But our body is always in the present moment.

Mindfulness is about grounding and reconnecting with your body so your mind can also be in the present moment.

This can be effective at breaking worrying mental thought patterns.

Learning at Highgate

Parent information sessions on the PYP this week

It was great to welcome 24 parents to the PYP information sessions this week. In the sessions, we looked at the vision and mission statements of the school via a PYP style lesson structure. Parents were very creative in their representations of our mission statement using playdough and drawings. The discussions lead us to some valuable ideas for further developing our statements. We also discussed student learning journey folders, outlining how these are integral to including parents, by providing a context for discussions about learning. Thanks to the questions and feedback from these sessions, we will run further sessions in Term 4. Keep an eye out for information on when these will be and we hope to see you there!

We have lots of information about learning at Highgate on our website. Select the main menu button and then Learning.

Do you have ideas for our menu or special days?  We would love to hear from you.  Currently we have a special Sushi Day and Ice Cream day each term, but we are looking for other creative ideas for both our specials and our everyday menu.  If you have ideas you would like to share, please complete this form.

2024 Enrolments

We are open for 2024 enrolments at all year levels, with some remaining spaces for this year. The department has relaxed restrictions around zoning and we are able to accept out-of-zone enrolments where capacity exists. If you have children at Kindy/Pre-school and intend to enrol them with us, please make sure that you have completed an EOI.

Spare Clothes

We have had an increase in students requiring a change of clothes recently. Although we do have an emergency supply in the Front Office we are running low on certain items. If your child has borrowed clothes to change into we ask that you please wash and return these items to the Front Office. Additionally, please check that your child has extra clothes packed in their school bag for any accidents that may occur during the school day, especially during the wet weather.

Sport News

Boys and Girls Knockout Netball Finals Day

On Monday 28/9, both Highgate’s knockout netball teams played on State finals day at Priceline Stadium.

The boys had matches against Henley Beach, St Martin de Porres and Stella Maris, finishing 2nd in the pool stage which meant they went on to play Stella Maris in the Grand Final.

The boys had to fight hard but eventually triumphed 34-18. Well done boys.

The girls had a tough pool of Westminster and Tatachilla. A close loss to Westminster and with Tatachilla being too strong, Highgate girls played off for 5th and 6th against Marrayatville.

Terrifically they prevailed. Super job girls.

Athletics Carnival

On Wednesday 6/9, a team of 30 Highgate students participated in our district athletics carnival at Santos Stadium.

Highgate had a fabulous day, particularly on the track, winning many events and coming 4th in the large schools competition.

Well done to all those who competed.

External Provider & Community News

External providers are external businesses who run programs/clinics/lessons for students at Highgate School. Other providers are included for your information, but parents should give due consideration to the programs as they are not endorsed by the school.

If you wish your child(ren) to be a part of any of the below programs, please contact them directly.

Holiday Swim

Holiday Swim is a Royal Life Saving Society South Australia initiative bringing affordable and educational swimming and water safety lessons to pools and inland waterway locations across Metro and Regional South Australia since the 1950’s. The aim of the program is to teach children critical life saving skills and basic swimming skills, to equip them with the knowledge to stay safe in, on and around the water.

The aim of keeping the program affordable, is to reach families and communities that might otherwise miss out on the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons, and as we approach the busy Summer months now is the time to equip them with the knowledge to save a life.

The program will be returning in December 2023 and January 2024 with the newly adapted Royal Life Saving Swim & Survive program.

Royal Life Saving also offer pathways into the aquatic industry with their ICONIC Bronze Awards. The Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross , Award of Merit and Distinction levels are designed for those wanting to further their knowledge and skill set, before moving into the aquatic industry as Lifeguards and Swim Teachers within the local communities.
