Wellbeing

Mindfulness

Mindfulness strategies are all about being ‘present’ by connecting with one or more of your five senses. They are sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. Here are some mindfulness techniques you can try:

  • Focus on 3 things you can hear, 3 things you can smell, and 3 things your body can physically feel
  • Touch is a great way to be present – you might stomp your feet, pat your cat or even have a massage
  • Get absorbed in the moment – playing sport, playing a video game or just having fun with friends is a great way to have a mental break from worries
  • Focus on really listening to an awesome song
  • Eat something yummy really slowly, savouring the taste
  • Splash cool water on your face – this can trigger the ‘mammalian dive reflex’ which is an automatic response that slows your heart rate and brain waves (designed to help us survive when swimming underwater)

Why does mindfulness help you feel calm?

Our mind has a unique ability to venture into the past or future!

For example, we can stress over a fight with had with a friend yesterday, or worry about a test we have next week.

But our body is always in the present moment.

Mindfulness is about grounding and reconnecting with your body so your mind can also be in the present moment.

This can be effective at breaking worrying mental thought patterns.

Learning at Highgate

Parent information sessions on the PYP

It was great to welcome 24 parents to the PYP information sessions lastweek. In the sessions, we looked at the vision and mission statements of the school via a PYP style lesson structure. Parents were very creative in their representations of our mission statement using playdough and drawings. The discussions lead us to some valuable ideas for further developing our statements. We also discussed student learning journey folders, outlining how these are integral to including parents, by providing a context for discussions about learning. Thanks to the questions and feedback from these sessions, we will run further sessions in Term 4. Keep an eye out for information on when these will be and we hope to see you there!

Holiday Swim

Holiday Swim is a Royal Life Saving Society South Australia initiative bringing affordable and educational swimming and water safety lessons to pools and inland waterway locations across Metro and Regional South Australia since the 1950’s. The aim of the program is to teach children critical life saving skills and basic swimming skills, to equip them with the knowledge to stay safe in, on and around the water.

The aim of keeping the program affordable, is to reach families and communities that might otherwise miss out on the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons, and as we approach the busy Summer months now is the time to equip them with the knowledge to save a life.

The program will be returning in December 2023 and January 2024 with the newly adapted Royal Life Saving Swim & Survive program.

Royal Life Saving also offer pathways into the aquatic industry with their ICONIC Bronze Awards. The Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross , Award of Merit and Distinction levels are designed for those wanting to further their knowledge and skill set, before moving into the aquatic industry as Lifeguards and Swim Teachers within the local communities.
