Highgate Happenings 20/10/2023

Hot off the Press………..

Building Works

  • The Oval project is tracking well , with no hiccups so far.
  • Nature Play will be back in operation next week – we needed to fix up a backflow valve which led to slight delays.
  • Waterproofing works above rooms 10,11,12 (grapevine section) is on track – we hope to have this area back in 4 weeks time.
  • All of the gym floor works have been finalised and the floor is once again looking great.
  • Gardens have been weeded and mulched – we will finish the areas around Opie and hopefully complete some planting at the upcoming working bee.

Volunteers for Sports Day

We are seeking volunteers for this year’s Sports Day. Sports Day will be held at Waite Oval, Urrbrae on Friday November 10th, with the R-2 program running from 8:45am – 11:45am and the year 3 – 6 program running from 8:45am – 1:55pm.

Volunteers are needed to assist classes in the smooth running of events and to accompany classes as they walk back to Highgate from Waite Oval at the end of the program. Volunteers will need to have completed a site induction and have a current Working With Children Check (WWCC) as well as the other Highgate Volunteer requirements. If you do not have a current WWCC, this can be obtained at:

https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/rights-and-law/rights-and-responsibilities/screening-checks/apply-for-a-screening-check

We will conduct a volunteer induction closer to the date if we have volunteers who are yet to complete this.

If you would like to check your volunteer status please email – dl.1063.info@schools.sa.edu.au

If you are able to offer your time as a volunteer, please complete the form via this link: Sports Day Volunteers

Any enquiries regarding volunteering please email dl.1063.info@schools.sa.edu.au

Lego League

First Lego League 2023 Torrens Park Regional
will take place this Sunday 29th October at Scotch College 9:00am-3:30pm
with our very own Highgate School Mario Team (previously known as Red Team) competing there.
For the first time two junior teams, Highgate Headers and Mountain Goats will present their project outside the competition.
It is a fantastic opportunity for all involved to celebrate their learning, efforts and have fun with students from across South Australia.
This event is open to public with a free entry, so if you in the area please join us and cheer for Highgate students at the Fisher Chapel of the Scotch Collage.
Younger students’ presentations are scheduled for 2:30pm also at the Chapel.
Another round of regional competitions will take place on 18th November, Saturday at Riverbank College, Angle Vale with our very own Highgate School Luigi Team formerly known as the Red Team competing on the day. Once again, you are invited to show your support.
If you happen to have a Mario’s or Luigi’s outfit and you would be willing to lend it, I would like to hear from you, or if it easier please drop it off in the front office with your details, so we can return it afterward.
A big thank you to all parents and old scholars who have supported us by volunteering their time during the preparation and on competition days.
Have a fantastic weekend,
Lucy Jachacy

New Library Management System and Term 4 borrowing

As we continue to develop our library to support students’ recreational and research based reading, we will be upgrading our library management system at the end of the term. The new system will allow parents and students to search our catalogue online at school and from home, as well as to access electronic books from the same system as our library search engine. In addition, the new system will allow users to access the system in a range of languages, including French, Chinese and several other family languages. There are other great features of the new system which will allow us to better support student learning.

In order to implement this new system, we have set the last day for parents and students to borrow books as Friday 17th November, with all books due back at school by Friday 24th November. We recognise that there will still be three weeks left of school after that, so students will be able to access books in their classrooms until the end of the term, as well as in the library itself. The new system will be installed during the week ending December 1st. Next year, we will ensure that students are provided with training on how to use the new system and will similarly provide training for parents to access it from home and in the library.

Wellbeing

Meet our staff

Victoria joined our team last year as a student on work placement.  She was since offered a position in our school.  Victoria moved to Australia from Sweden when she was in High School and she loves reading books of all genres.  She also loves watching basketball on the weekend and has a very adventurous Burmese cat named Milo.

Hikari arrived in 2007 from Japan to be with her husband.  They now have 2 daughters who are continuing their schooling in upper primary and middle school.  Hikari loves to cook and bake meals and desserts which are worthy of the Great Australian Bake Off.

Student Learning Journeys

Student Learning Journeys were sent home this week for students to share their learning in Term 3 with their family members. These Learning Journeys are an important part of our reporting package (along with formal written reports and Parent-Teacher Interviews). Please take the time to sit and talk through your child(ren)’s Learning Journey because it provides the context for their learning and can generate some great discussions which will help you to better support your child at school. There is a feedback page in the front section of each child’s Learning Journey. Please take the time to write constructive feedback for your child in the “Term 3” space provided. In case you are unsure of what to write, here are some suggestions for feedback sentence starters you might want to use:

“I like the way you have…”

“Your writing really shows …. well”

“I can see that you have made great improvements with ….”

“You clearly are very knowledgeable about …. now”

“Thanks for teaching me about…Let’s find out more about it at home.”

PYP (International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program) Parent Sessions

Please remember to book in for one of this term’s parent sessions (information sent through EdSmart earlier this week).

One of the links wasn’t working, so a new link is being sent today for Wednesday November 1st for the “PYP Parent Information Workshop: A unit of inquiry experience”.

Holiday Swim

Holiday Swim is a Royal Life Saving Society South Australia initiative bringing affordable and educational swimming and water safety lessons to pools and inland waterway locations across Metro and Regional South Australia since the 1950’s. The aim of the program is to teach children critical life saving skills and basic swimming skills, to equip them with the knowledge to stay safe in, on and around the water.

The aim of keeping the program affordable, is to reach families and communities that might otherwise miss out on the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons, and as we approach the busy Summer months now is the time to equip them with the knowledge to save a life.

The program will be returning in December 2023 and January 2024 with the newly adapted Royal Life Saving Swim & Survive program.

Royal Life Saving also offer pathways into the aquatic industry with their ICONIC Bronze Awards. The Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross , Award of Merit and Distinction levels are designed for those wanting to further their knowledge and skill set, before moving into the aquatic industry as Lifeguards and Swim Teachers within the local communities.
