Hot off the Press………..
Festival Choir
On Monday, students performed on stage at the Adelaide Festival Theatre as part of the Public Primary Schools Festival of Music. Every student sang their hearts out and showcased the learning and hard work that has been happening behind the scenes this year. A big thank you to the parents and teachers who helped out during rehearsals and to Lisa (our choir trainer), Britt and Hayley for making this all possible. Congratulations to all.
Sustainable Schools
We are pleased to announce that Highgate School is now a part of the Green Adelaide Sustainable School’s Initiative. Our newly formed green group (known as ‘La Nature’) have met six times this term already to launch new ideas for our bin program (recycling, waste, 10 cent recycling and organic waste). They have come up with several ideas to encourage students to use the correct bin when sorting their recess, lunch and classroom waste. Green Adelaide will assist us with our SEMP (Site Environment Management Plan) to reach our sustainability goals and help link this work to the curriculum and our learning. Environmental Leaders in Years 5 and 6 have already toured a local school to see first-hand the initiatives started there – everything from how they manage their bins, design nature play, establish kitchen gardens and other environmental projects.

PSSO Tour
I am delighted to share some exciting news with you. Five of our Highgate School students are active members of the Primary School Strings Orchestra (PSSO), and they recently embarked on a memorable tour to Adare. During this tour, which took place from 23rd August to 25th August, our students had the incredible opportunity to perform music for five different schools in the southern region, including Mount Compass School and Goolwa School.
(Thank you to Huiling Li for sharing this with us)

Lego League
The Highgate School, 2023 Lego League teams have begun planning and are looking to liaise with adults who have a particular interest/skills/knowledge/experience in any of the following fields: Food, photography, soccer and/or hiking. If you think you may be able to support them, please contact Lucy.
Outdoor Learning
It has been great to see a few examples of outdoor learning this term with the year 4 camp at Woodhouse involving many challenging activities such as hiking, obstacle courses and laser tag. The year 2 classes visited the Waite Arboretum in Unley this week and participated in scavenger hunts, orienteering and drawing/sketching local wildflowers. These activities provide students with loads of vitamin D, a love for nature, problem-solving challenges as well as group work skills which contribute to an enjoyment of learning and well-rounded cognitive and physical development. Studies have shown that outdoor learning improves learning overall through physical and mental challenge, connection with nature and creativity.

Wellbeing
Wear It Wednesday took a Western theme this week!
Tania joined the Highgate School team 5 years ago. She has 5 children which no doubt explains her flexibility and open-mindedness. She enjoys party planning in her spare time. Her favourite canteen item is the Healthy Munchie Box.
South African born, Fiona moved to Australia more than 20 years ago. She joined the Highgate School team 4 years ago. She is a fervent tennis fan and doesn’t miss a chance to watch a match. In her spare time, she supports her 3 children’s many sporting activities which she fully enjoys. Her favourite canteen items are the Anzac Cookies which she bakes onsite.

Holiday Swim
Holiday Swim is a Royal Life Saving Society South Australia initiative bringing affordable and educational swimming and water safety lessons to pools and inland waterway locations across Metro and Regional South Australia since the 1950’s. The aim of the program is to teach children critical life saving skills and basic swimming skills, to equip them with the knowledge to stay safe in, on and around the water.
The aim of keeping the program affordable, is to reach families and communities that might otherwise miss out on the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons, and as we approach the busy Summer months now is the time to equip them with the knowledge to save a life.
The program will be returning in December 2023 and January 2024 with the newly adapted Royal Life Saving Swim & Survive program.
Royal Life Saving also offer pathways into the aquatic industry with their ICONIC Bronze Awards. The Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross , Award of Merit and Distinction levels are designed for those wanting to further their knowledge and skill set, before moving into the aquatic industry as Lifeguards and Swim Teachers within the local communities.
