Centenary Day – Friday 4/8/23

Our aim is to give the students an understanding of some of the ways that children would have experienced school 100 years ago and of course, to celebrate our 100th birthday.

A few things to note:

  • Students, staff (and parents if they wish) are welcome to come dressed in 1920s clothing.
  • Laptops to be left at home as students will be using traditional classroom materials
  • All lessons will be focused on 1920s experiences.
  • All staff to be addressed by title and last name during the day
  • All students will receive a centenary hat on the day.
  • There will be a canteen special.

Here is an outline for the day.

CENTENARY DAY COMMUNITY VERSION

You will see that we will also hold our student discos on this day.

For those of you wondering, we will be having a Centenary theme for our end of year celebrations this year.

We hope that you can join us on this special day. If you happen to know any old scholars, please pass on the invitation to a tour and morning tea at 11:15am.

Hot off the Press…….

Visit from the Hon. Justin Hanson MLC

On Monday 19/6/23, we were visited by the Hon Justin Hanson MLC. Our tour guides Hallie and Hunter did an amazing job, telling him all about the learning programs that we offer, our recent renovations, our history and many other things. He was particularly impressed with our Hive as a support for student regulation, as well as the growing number of student initiatives such as Save Our Soles.

Room 19 Staffing Update

Chloe Bowman will be returning from leave next term, teaching Mon-Wed in room 19. Bethany Von Doussa will be joining our year 5/6 team, teaching the class on Thursday and Friday. Bethany has several years of experience at this year level and comes highly recommended. Mary Legoe has recently shared her news that she is expecting baby number 2 and will remain on leave.

We will therefore be ‘farewelling’ Belinda at the end of the term, although we hope to see her back with us as a relief teacher.

2024 Enrolments

We are open for 2024 enrolments at all year levels, with some remaining spaces for this year. The department has relaxed restrictions around zoning and we are able to accept out-of-zone enrolments where capacity exists. If you have children at Kindy/Pre-school and intend to enrol them with us, please make sure that you have completed an EOI.

Centenary hats

To celebrate our school’s birthday, we are gifting centenary hats to each student.  You should have received an email asking for your child’s size so that we can order correctly.  There will be a follow up email sent early next week – if you do not receive a follow up email, this means that we already have your order.

Spare Clothes

We have had an increase in students requiring a change of clothes recently. Although we do have an emergency supply in the Front Office we are running low on certain items. If your child has borrowed clothes to change into we ask that you please wash and return these items to the Front Office. Additionally, please check that your child has extra clothes packed in their school bag for any accidents that may occur during the school day, especially during the wet weather.

News from the Racetrack: Highgate ‘Hot Rod’ Triumph Again!

The Highgate Hot Rod, our very own Pedal Prix team, had a fantastic day at Victoria Park racetrack in their second race of the HPV Super Series season on Sunday 18th June.

The Highgate team had a challenging start with a flat tyre in the early minutes of the race meaning that at the end of the first hour they were sitting 30th out of the 31 other primary school teams in their division.

With courage, a great team spirit, and much hard work, the team clawed their way back to place 3rd at the end of the 6-hour race – what a spectacular result and achievement!
The year 4-6 pedal prix team includes Dylan K, Kai K, Luca H, Angus G, Aston A, Henry M, Oliver C, Tiffany S, Gabriel M, Sanuji A, and Aidan S.
Thanks again go to team coach Vajira, team manager Lyndal, team mechanic, Tim, and the other riders’ parents who provided support, and fuel throughout the day.
Certainly, we have seen the kids grow in their endurance, skill, confidence, and teamwork over the past few months of Pedal Prix.
If you’re interested in finding out more about pedal prix, check out the Australian HPV Super Series website, or watch this short Behind the News episode which gives a behind the scenes look at what’s involved in this team-based sport.
Coming up:
Knockout sport continues in the coming weeks. We have boys netball 2nd round; boys and girls football 2nd round; girls soccer 2nd round and then the boys and girls basketball carnival.

Further information about our other extra-curricular activities is available: Visit our website, Main Menu, Learning and then Extracurricular.
