Extra-Curricular News

Pedal Prix Success at Tailem Bend

On Saturday 20th May the Highgate Hot Rod Team put in a fantastic effort to win 3rd place in their first pedal prix race in the Australian HPV Super Series. The race was held at The Bend racetrack in Tailem Bend. The year 4-6 pedal prix team includes Dylan K, Kai K, Luca H, Angus G, Aston A, Henry M, Oliver C, Tiffany S, Gabriel M, Sanuji A, and Aidan S.  For all the students it was their first experience of racing, and they demonstrated immense courage, endurance, and teamwork as they competed on the track with over 200 other vehicles riding almost 160km during the 6-hour race. The outstanding result is also thanks to the hard work of team coach Vajira, team manager Lyndal, and team mechanic Tim – who painted the Highgate hotrod with hot pink detailing in the lead up to the race. We certainly stood out! Thank you also to the parents who supported the team throughout the long race day. Given this was the team’s first race we are excited to see what they do over the rest of the season. Well done team!

Learning at Highgate

Here are some thoughts from Mitch, one of our Year 5/6 teachers about how our journey towards PYP accreditation is going……….

I think what’s been great about Highgate’s journey into the IB has been the opportunity for me to share and develop my strengths as a teacher. I’ve always felt drawn to an inquiry pedagogy and try to engage students by bringing global issues into the classroom. However, in the past I have felt that this approach wasn’t always viable when considering the curriculum and site improvement plan goals. However, with the tools and understanding I have gained since starting our journey, I now have the confidence that teaching in this way can bring out the best in my students. When looking at the curriculum through the lenses of the IB key concepts, learning opportunities unfold, and I get excited to explore topics with my students in a more meaningful way.

Students have taken to many aspects of IB very quickly and we are starting to see it in the classroom. Many students are now able to identify the learner profile attributes in themselves and their peers and confidently refer to them in conversations and reflections. When exploring topics within our units of inquiry, we are noticing that students are able to have increasingly deep and meaningful discussions. As we continue to reinforce the IB key concepts, I only see this happening more often.

Since I started at Highgate, we have always been a site that values collaboration and teamwork but since starting our IB journey, this has been taken to another level. Having time to plan units of inquiry with our teams and a member of leadership has allowed us to share strengths and interests we otherwise would never have seen. I have learnt from my colleagues and benefited greatly from being able to share our experiences of teaching the same unit.
